Cephalochordata este o subfila chordată definită de prezența unui notochord care persistă de-a lungul vieții. Este reprezentată în oceanele moderne de către lanțuri. Împreună cu urochordata sora sa, Cephalochordata poate fi clasificată ca aparținând taxonului Protochordata. Caracteristicile lui Cephalochordata sunt că ele sunt animale marine, sunt segmentate și că posedă corpuri alungite cu un noroc care extinde lungimea corpului și cirri înconjurând gura pentru a obține hrană. În cephalochordata, notochordul se extinde de la cap la coadă și persistă pe tot parcursul vieții. Membrii acestei subfile sunt foarte mici și nu au părți grele, făcând ca fosilele lor să fie greu de găsit. Speciile fosile au fost găsite în roci foarte vechi care predomină vertebrate. Există șisturi fosile celebre din șistul Burgess Middle Cambrian din British Columbia, care a produs fosilele Pikaia. Recent, o fosilă cefalocordată diferită a fost găsită în sudul Chinei. Ea datează la începutul perioadei Cambrian și este cea mai veche fosilă cunoscută a liniei cefalocordate. Au numeroase fâșii de ghirlandă și au sexe separate.
