Vitex agnus-castus
Vitex agnus-castus, numit și Vitex, Arborele Crăciun, Chasteberry, Balsamul lui Abraham sau Piperul de călugăr, este un nativ din regiunea mediteraneeană. Este una dintre puținele specii de zone temperate de Vitex, care este în ansamblu un gen de plante tropicale și subtropicale cu flori. Theophrastus a menționat arbustul de mai multe ori, ca agnos în ancheta despre plante. Vitex, numele său în Pliny the Bătrân, este derivat din vieo latină, adică în legătură sau legare, o referire la utilizarea Vitex agnus-castus în coș. Numele său specific macaronic se repetă "greu" în greacă și latină. Confuzia cu Vitex din partea colonelilor timpurii din Indiile de Vest poate că ia dat lui Ricinus communis denumirea de "plantă de ulei de castor". Sau numele "ulei de ricin" ar fi putut proveni din folosirea sa ca înlocuitor al castorului.
