Codex
Un codex este o carte formată dintr-un număr de foi de hârtie, vellum, papirus sau altele similare, cu conținut scris manual, care este de obicei stivuit și legat prin fixarea unei muchii și cu o acoperire mai groasă decât foile, dar uneori concertina continuă și pliată -stil. Alternativa la formatul codificat paginat pentru un document lung este parcurgerea continuă. Exemple de coduri pliate sunt codurile Maya. Uneori, termenul este folosit pentru un format de carte, inclusiv cărți tipărite moderne, dar cu excepția cărților pliate.
