Compostul este materie organică care a fost descompusă și reciclată ca un îngrășământ și o modificare a solului. Compostul este un ingredient cheie în agricultura ecologică. Procesul de descompunere este ajutat de mărunțirea materiei vegetale, adăugarea apei și asigurarea unei aerisiri adecvate prin rotirea regulată a amestecului. Viermii și ciupercile distrug materialul. Bacteriile și ciupercile aerobice gestionează procesul chimic prin transformarea intrărilor în căldură, dioxid de carbon și amoniu. Amoniacul este forma de azot utilizată de plante. Atunci când amoniacul nu este utilizat de plante, el este în continuare transformat de bacterii în nitrați prin procesul de nitrificare. Compostul poate fi bogat în substanțe nutritive. Se utilizează în grădini, peisagistică, horticultură și agricultură.
