Control științific
Un control științific este un experiment sau o observație menită să minimizeze efectele altor variabile decât variabila independentă unică. Aceasta crește fiabilitatea rezultatelor, adesea printr-o comparație între măsurătorile de control și celelalte măsurători. Controalele științifice fac parte din metoda științifică. Un exemplu de control experimental ar putea fi testarea îngrășămintelor din plante, dându-le doar jumătate din plantele dintr-o grădină: plantele care nu primesc îngrășământ sunt grupul de control, deoarece stabilesc nivelul de bază al creșterii pe care plantele tratate cu îngrășăminte vor fi comparativ cu. Fără un grup de control, experimentul nu poate determina dacă plantele tratate cu îngrășăminte cresc mai mult decât ar avea dacă nu ar fi tratate. În mod ideal, toate variabilele dintr-un experiment vor fi controlate și nici unul nu va fi necontrolat. Într-un astfel de experiment, dacă toate controalele funcționează așa cum era de așteptat, este posibil să se concluzioneze că experimentul funcționează conform destinației și că rezultatele experimentului se datorează efectului variabilei testate.
