Evoluția convergentă descrie evoluția independentă a unor trăsături asemănătoare la specii de origini diferite. Convergența evoluției creează structuri analoge care au formă sau funcție similare, dar care nu au fost prezente în ultimul strămoș comun al acestor grupuri. Termenul clasic pentru același fenomen este homoplasia, din greacă pentru aceeași formă. Evoluția recurentă a zborului este un exemplu clasic de evoluție convergentă. Insectele, păsările și liliecii care au zburat au evoluat independent de capacitatea de zbor. Ei s-au "convertit" pe această trăsătură utilă. Caracteristicile funcționale similare care rezultă din evoluția convergentă sunt denumite analog, în contrast cu structurile sau trăsăturile omoloage, care au o origine comună, dar nu neapărat o funcție similară. Anatomistul britanic Richard Owen a fost primul om de știință care a recunoscut diferența fundamentală dintre analogii și omologii. Baturile și aripile pterosaur constituie un exemplu de structuri analoage, în timp ce aripile bat sunt omoloage cu antebrațele omului și ale altor mamifere, împărtășind o stare ancestrală, în ciuda servirii diferitelor funcții.
