În studiul limbii, al descrierii sau al lingvisticii descriptive se află lucrarea de analiză și descriere obiectivă a limbii vorbite de un grup de oameni într-o comunitate de vorbire. Toate cercetările științifice în lingvistică sunt descriptive; ca toate celelalte științe, scopul său este de a observa lumea lingvistică așa cum este ea, fără prejudecățile ideilor preconcepute despre cum ar trebui să fie. Lingvistica descriptivă modernă se bazează pe o abordare structurală a limbajului, exemplificată în lucrarea lui Leonard Bloomfield și alții. Descrierea lingvistică este adesea contrară cu prescripția lingvistică, care se găsește în special în educație și publicare. Prescripția încearcă să definească formele de limbă standard și să ofere consiliere cu privire la utilizarea eficientă a limbajului și poate fi considerată o prezentare a rezultatelor cercetării descriptive într-o formă învățabilă, deși se bazează și pe aspecte mai subiective ale esteticii limbajului. Prescripția și descrierea sunt complementare, dar au priorități diferite și uneori sunt văzute a fi în conflict. Descriptivismul este convingerea că descrierea este mai semnificativă sau mai importantă pentru a preda, a studia și a practica decât o rețetă.

Prima definiție a descriptivului din dicționar este caracterizată de sau care conține descrierea; pentru a descrie. O altă definiție a descriptivului servește pentru a descrie referentul substantivului modificat, ca de exemplu adjectivul maro în contrast cu cel al meu și fostul. Descriptive se referă, de asemenea, la descriere sau clasificare, sau nu pe baza explicațiilor sau prescripțiilor.
