From French, from Turkish dayi, literally: maternal uncle, hence title given to an older person.

Dey a fost titlul dat domnitorilor Regiei Algiers și Tripoli sub Imperiul Otoman din 1671. Douăzeci și nouă de jucării au deținut funcția de la înființarea deilicatului din Algeria până la cucerirea franceză în 1830. Dey a fost aleasă de către liderii civili, militari și religioși locali pentru a guverna pe viață și a condus cu un grad ridicat de autonomie față de sultanul otoman . Principalele surse ale veniturilor sale erau impozitele pe populația agricolă, triburile religioase și plățile de protecție oferite de Corsairs, considerate pirați care pradă transportului maritim mediteranean. Dey a fost asistat la guvernare printr-un divan alcătuit din șefii armatei și al marinei, directorul de transport maritim, trezorierul general și colectorul de triburi. Tărâmul lui Alger a fost împărțit în trei provincii, fiecare dintre care a fost administrat de o beie pe care a numit-o. Regimul jucăriilor din Alger a încetat la 5 iulie 1830, când Hussein Dey sa predat la invadarea forțelor franceze. Ultimul Dey din Tripoli a fost ucis de Ahmed Karamanli, care a înființat dinastia din 1711, Karamanli.
