Calculul distribuit este un domeniu de informatică care studiază sistemele distribuite. Un sistem distribuit este un sistem software în care componentele localizate pe computerele din rețea comunică și coordonează acțiunile lor prin trecerea mesajelor. Componentele interacționează între ele pentru a atinge un obiectiv comun. Trei caracteristici semnificative ale sistemelor distribuite sunt: concurența componentelor, lipsa unui ceas global și eșecul independent al componentelor. Exemple de sisteme distribuite variază de la sistemele bazate pe SOA la jocurile online multiplayer masive, la aplicațiile peer-to-peer. Un program de calculator care rulează într-un sistem distribuit este numit un program distribuit, iar programarea distribuită este procesul de scriere a unor astfel de programe. Există multe alternative pentru mecanismul de transmitere a mesajelor, inclusiv conectori RPC și cozi de mesaje. Un obiectiv important și o provocare a sistemelor distribuite este transparența locației. Calculul distribuit se referă și la utilizarea sistemelor distribuite pentru a rezolva problemele de calcul.
