O lovitură orizontală este o mișcare verticală a aerului ca fenomen legat de vreme. Una dintre cele două forțe cauzează mișcarea aerului. Zonele localizate de aer cald sau rece vor prezenta mișcări verticale. O masă de aer cald va fi în mod obișnuit mai puțin densă decât regiunea înconjurătoare și astfel va crește până când ajunge la un aer care este mai cald sau mai puțin dens decât el însuși. Conversia va avea loc pentru o masă de aer rece și este cunoscută sub denumirea de subsidence. Această mișcare a volumelor mari de aer, mai ales atunci când regiunile cu aer cald, umed, pot crea nori mari și reprezintă principala cauză a furtunilor. Proiecțiile pot fi create și prin regiuni joase sau înalte. O regiune cu presiune scăzută va atrage aerul din zona înconjurătoare, care se va deplasa spre centru și apoi se va ridica, creând un curent de aer. O regiune de înaltă presiune va atrage apoi aer din zona înconjurătoare, care se va deplasa spre centru și se va scufunda, creând un downdraft. Updrafts și downdrafts, împreună cu foarfeca de vânt, în general, sunt un contribuitor major la accidentele avionului în timpul decolării și aterizării într-o furtună. Cazurile extreme, cunoscute sub numele de downbursts și microbursts, pot fi mortale și dificil de prezis sau de observat.
