Edom
Edom sau Idumea era o regiune istorică locuită în Semit din Levantul de Sud situat la sud de Iudeea și Marea Moartă. Este menționată în înregistrările biblice ca Împărăția Edomului din epoca de fier al mileniului 1 î.Chr., Iar în antichitatea clasică, numele înrudit Idumea a fost folosit pentru a se referi la o zonă mai mică din aceeași regiune. Numele Edom înseamnă "roșu" în ebraică și ia fost dat lui Esau, cel mai mare fiu al patriarhului evreu Isaac, odată ce a mâncat "mistuirea roșie", pe care Biblia o folosea ironic pentru faptul că sa născut "roșu peste tot “. Tora, Tanakh și Noul Testament descriu astfel Edomiții ca descendenți ai lui Esau.
