Elul
Elul este a douăsprezecea lună a anului civil evreiesc și a șasea lună a anului ecleziastic în calendarul evreiesc. Este o lună de vară de 29 de zile. Elul are loc de obicei în august-septembrie în calendarul gregorian. Numele lunii, ca și numele restului lunilor calendaristice evreiești, a fost adus din exilul babilonian și a provenit din cuvântul akkadian pentru "Harvest". Un nume asemănător al lunii a fost folosit și în Akkadian, sub forma elūlu. În tradiția evreiască, luna lui Elul este o perioadă de pocăință în pregătirea pentru Zilele înalte sfinte ale lui Rosh Hashana și Yom Kippur. Cuvântul "Elul" este similar cu rădăcina verbului "căutare" în aramaică. Talmudul scrie că cuvântul ebraic "Elul" poate fi extins ca un acronim pentru "Ani L'dodi V'dodi Li" - "Eu sunt iubitul meu și iubitul meu este al meu". Elul este privit ca un timp pentru a-și căuta inima și a se apropia de Dumnezeu în pregătirea pentru ziua următoare a judecății, Rosh Hashanah, și Ziua Ispășirii, Yom Kippur. În timpul lunii Elul, există o serie de ritualuri speciale care au dus la Zilele Înalte Sfinte.
