O scară rulantă este o scară în mișcare - un dispozitiv de transport al transportorului pentru transportul persoanelor între etajele unei clădiri. Dispozitivul este alcătuit dintr-un lanț cu acționare motorizată, cu trepte individuale, legate, care se deplasează în sus sau în jos pe piste, permițând treptelor trepte să rămână orizontale. Scările rulante sunt folosite în întreaga lume pentru a deplasa traficul pietonal în locurile în care ascensoarele ar fi impracticabile. Principalele domenii de utilizare includ magazine, centre comerciale, aeroporturi, sisteme de tranzit, centre de convenții, hoteluri, arene, stadioane și clădiri publice. Escalatoarele au capacitatea de a muta un număr mare de persoane și pot fi plasate în același spațiu fizic pe care se poate instala o scară. Nu au un interval de așteptare, pot fi folosite pentru a ghida oamenii spre ieșiri principale sau expoziții speciale și pot fi protejate împotriva intemperiilor pentru utilizare în exterior. O scară rulantă care nu funcționează poate funcționa ca o scară normală, în timp ce multe alte mijloace de transport devin inutile atunci când se rup.
