O scufundare este o pantă abruptă sau o stâncă lungă care apare din cauza defecțiunilor și eroziunii rezultate și separă două zone relativ de nivel de altitudini diferite. De obicei escarpamentul este folosit interschimbabil cu scarp. Dar unele surse diferențiază cei doi termeni, în cazul în care escarpment se referă la marginea între două forme de relief, în timp ce scarp este sinonim cu o stâncă sau pantă abruptă. Suprafața pantei abrupte se numește o față abruptă.
