Înghețarea este activitatea de luptă cu lamele. Cea mai obișnuită versiune a gardurilor de astăzi, numită, de asemenea, garduri olimpice sau garduri competitive, este împărțită în trei categorii de arme: folie, sabie și épée. Prima definiție a gardurilor în dicționar este practica, arta sau sportul de luptă cu săbii, în special sportul de a folosi folii, épées sau sabii în cadrul unui set de reguli care să înscrie puncte. Alte definiții ale gardurilor sunt firele, mizele, etc., folosite ca garduri. Împrejmuirea este, de asemenea, garduri colectiv.
