În Roma antică, o genă, plural gentes, se referea la o familie, formată din toți acei indivizi care împărtășesc aceeași nomenclatură și pretind că coborârea de la un strămoș comun. O ramură a unui gens era numită o agitație. Genul era o importantă structură socială la Roma și în toată Italia în perioada Republicii Romane. O mare parte din situația socială a unui individ depindea de genul la care el a aparținut. Anumiți genți erau considerați patricieni, alții plebeieni, în timp ce unii aveau ramuri patrician și plebeiene. Importanța apartenenței la o genă a scăzut considerabil în perioada imperială.
