Gorilele constituie genul denumit "Gorilla", cel mai mare gen extins de primate de dimensiuni fizice. Sunt locuitori ai terenului, preponderent ierbivore, care locuiesc în pădurile din Africa Centrală. Genul este împărțit în două specii și fie patru sau cinci subspecii. ADN-ul gorilelor este foarte asemănător cu cel al unui om, de la 95-99% în funcție de ceea ce este socotit și sunt următorii rude apropiate oamenilor după cimpanzeii. Gospodăriile naturale ale gorillaselor acoperă păduri tropicale sau subtropicale din Africa. Deși gama acoperă un procent mic din Africa, gorilele acoperă o gamă largă de niveluri. Gorila montană locuiește în pădurile norilor Montane Rift ale vulcanilor Virunga, cu o altitudine cuprinsă între 2.200-4.300 de metri. Gorilele joase trăiesc în păduri dense și în mlaștinile joase și mlaștini la fel de joase ca nivelul mării, cu gorilele din vestul câmpiei care trăiesc în țările din vestul Africii Centrale și gorilele din estul țării care trăiesc în Republica Democrată Congo, în apropiere de granița cu Rwanda.
