Infarctul miocardic sau infarctul miocardic acut este termenul medical pentru un eveniment cunoscut ca un atac de cord. Se întâmplă atunci când sângele se oprește curgând în mod corespunzător într-o parte a inimii și mușchiul inimii este rănit din cauza lipsei de oxigen suficient. De obicei, aceasta se datorează faptului că una dintre arterele coronare care furnizează sânge pentru inimă dezvoltă o blocaj datorită unei acumulări instabile de globule albe, colesterol și grăsimi. Evenimentul este numit "acut" dacă este brusc și grav. O persoană care are un MI acut are, de obicei, o durere bruscă la nivelul pieptului care este simțită în spatele osului sânului și uneori se deplasează la brațul stâng sau la partea stângă a gâtului. În plus, persoana poate avea dificultăți de respirație, transpirație, greață, vărsături, bătăi anormale ale inimii și anxietate. Femeile experimentează mai puține dintre aceste simptome decât bărbații, dar de obicei au dificultăți de respirație, slăbiciune, senzație de indigestie și oboseală. În multe cazuri, în unele estimări de până la 64%, persoana nu are dureri toracice sau alte simptome. Acestea se numesc infarct miocardic "silențios".
