In vitro
Studiile in vitro se efectuează cu celule sau cu molecule biologice studiate în afara contextului lor biologic normal; de exemplu proteinele sunt examinate în soluție sau celulele în mediu de cultură artificială. Denumite experimental "experimente cu tuburi de testare", aceste studii în domeniul biologiei și al subdisciplinelor sale sunt în mod tradițional realizate în tuburi de testare, flacoane, vase Petri etc., dar care implică acum întreaga gamă de tehnici utilizate în biologia moleculară și aplicații comerciale mai mari. Exemple de studii in vitro includ: izolarea, creșterea și identificarea microorganismelor; celule derivate din organisme multicelulare; componente sub-celulare; extracte celulare sau subcelulare; molecule purificate; precum și producția comercială de antibiotice și alte produse farmaceutice. Studiile care se desfășoară utilizând componente ale unui organism care au fost izolate din mediul lor obișnuit biologic permit o analiză mai detaliată sau mai convenabilă decât se poate face cu organisme întregi. În contrast, studiile in vivo sunt cele efectuate la animale, inclusiv la om și la plantele întregi.
