În economie, elasticitatea este măsurarea modului în care o variabilă economică este receptivă la o schimbare în altă. De exemplu: ▪ "Dacă reduc prețul produsului meu, cât mai mult voi vinde?" ▪ "Dacă cresc prețul unui bun, cum va afecta vânzările acestui alt bun?" ▪ "Dacă învățăm că o resursă devine puține, oamenii se vor lupta să o achiziționeze?" O variabilă elastică este una care răspunde mai mult decât proporțional la schimbările din alte variabile. În schimb, o variabilă inelastică este una care se modifică mai puțin decât proporțional ca răspuns la schimbările din alte variabile. Elasticitatea poate fi cuantificată ca raportul dintre variația procentuală într-o variabilă și variația procentuală a altei variabile, atunci când ultima variabilă are o influență cauzală asupra primei variabile. O definiție mai precisă este dată de calculul diferențial. Este un instrument pentru măsurarea capacității de răspuns a unei variabile la schimbările în altă variabilă cauzală. Elasticitatea are avantajul de a fi un raport unitar, independent de tipul de cantități care variază.
