Insectele sunt o clasă de nevertebrate din arborele artropod care are un exoschelet chitinos, un corp cu trei părți, trei perechi de picioare articulate, ochi compuși și o pereche de antene. Acestea sunt printre cele mai diverse grupuri de animale de pe planetă, inclusiv peste un milion de specii descrise și reprezentând mai mult de jumătate din toate organismele vii cunoscute. Numărul speciilor existente este estimat la între șase și zece milioane și reprezintă, probabil, peste 90% din diferitele forme de viață ale animalelor de pe Pământ. Insecte pot fi găsite în aproape toate mediile, deși doar un număr mic de specii se află în oceane, un habitat dominat de un alt grup artropod, crustacee. Ciclurile de viata ale insectelor variaza dar majoritatea insectelor se incadreaza in oua. Creșterea insectelor este limitată de exoscheletul inelastic și dezvoltarea implică o serie de molii. Etapele imature pot diferi de adulți în structură, obișnuință și habitat și pot include o etapă pasivă a pupa în acele grupuri care suferă metamorfoză completă. Insectele care suferă metamorfoză incompletă nu au un stadiu de pupa, iar adulții se dezvoltă printr-o serie de etape nymfa.
