Corpus Juris Civilis
Corpus Juris Civilis este numele modern pentru o colecție de lucrări fundamentale în jurisprudență, emisă între anii 529 și 534, prin ordinul lui Iustinian al I, Împăratul Răsărit Roman. Acesta este, uneori, numit și Codul lui Iustinian, deși acest nume aparține mai bine părții intitulată Codex Justinianus. Lucrarea planificată a avut trei părți: Codul este o compilare, prin selectare și extragere, a actelor imperiale până în prezent; Digest sau Pandects este o enciclopedie compusă în mare parte din scurte extrase din scrierile juriștilor romani; iar institutele reprezintă un manual pentru elevi, introducând în principal codul, deși are elemente de conceptual importante care sunt mai puțin dezvoltate în Cod sau Digest. Toate cele trei părți, chiar manualul, au dat forță de lege. Acestea au fost intenționate să fie, împreună, singura sursă de lege; trimiterea la orice altă sursă, inclusiv textele originale din care au fost preluate Codul și Digest, a fost interzisă.
