Jean-Baptiste Pierre Antoine de Monet, Chevalier de Lamarck, adesea cunoscută pur și simplu ca Lamarck, a fost naturalist francez. El a fost un soldat, biolog, academician și susținător al ideii că evoluția a avut loc și a continuat în conformitate cu legile naturale. El a dat termenul biologie un sens mai larg prin coincidența termenului pentru științe speciale, chimie, meteorologie, geologie și zoologie botanică. Lamarck a luptat în războiul din Pomerania cu Prusia și a primit o comisie de vitejie pe câmpul de luptă. La postul său din Monaco, Lamarck a devenit interesat de istoria naturală și sa hotărât să studieze medicina. Sa retras din armată după ce a fost rănit în 1766 și sa întors la studiile sale medicale. Lamarck a dezvoltat un interes deosebit pentru botanică și mai târziu, după ce a publicat o lucrare în trei volume Flore française, a obținut calitatea de membru al Academiei Franceze de Științe în 1779. Lamarck a devenit implicat în Jardin des Plantes și a fost numit în funcția de președinte al Botani în 1788. Când a fost înființată Muzeul național d'histoire naturelle în 1793, Lamarck a fost numit profesor de zoologie.
