În retorică, litote este o figură de vorbire în care subevaluarea este folosită pentru efectul retoric, în principal prin dublu negativ. De exemplu, mai degrabă decât să spunem că ceva este atractiv, s-ar putea spune doar că nu este "neatractiv". Litotes este o formă de subevaluare, întotdeauna deliberată și cu intenția de accentuare. Cu toate acestea, interpretarea negării poate depinde de context, inclusiv de contextul cultural. În vorbire, poate depinde și de intonație și accentuare; de exemplu, expresia "nu este rea" poate fi spusă astfel încât să însemne ceva de la "mediocru" la "excelent". Poate fi folosit pentru a înmuia expresii mai aspre, asemănătoare cu eufemismul. Utilizarea liticelor este frecventă în limbile engleză, rusă, germană, olandeză, ebraică, aramaică, greacă și franceză. Ele sunt trăsături ale poeziei engleze vechi și ale sagetelor islandeze și reprezintă un mijloc de reținere stoică. Cuvântul litote este derivat din cuvântul grecesc litos care înseamnă "simplu, mic sau slab". George Orwell sa plâns de excesul de construcție "nu un ..." în eseul său "Politica și limba engleză".
