Un manuscris este orice document scris de mână, spre deosebire de a fi imprimat sau reprodus în alt mod. Înainte de sosirea tipăririi, toate documentele și cărțile erau manuscrise. În publicații și contexte academice, un manuscris este textul transmis editorului sau imprimantei în pregătire pentru publicare, indiferent de format. Până de curând, un tipar pregătit pe o mașină de scris a fost obișnuit, dar astăzi este un fișier digital cu imprimat, pregătit în manuscris. Manuscrisele sunt în mod obișnuit necesare de către societățile de publicare înainte de a fi publicate.
