Metastaza, sau boala metastatică, este răspândirea unui cancer de la un organ la altul. Noile manifestări ale bolii astfel generate sunt denumite metastaze. Se credea anterior că doar celulele tumorale maligne și infecțiile au capacitatea de metastaze; totuși, aceasta este reconsiderată din cauza unor noi cercetări. În metastazele de origine este un cuvânt grecesc care înseamnă "deplasare", de la meta, "next" și στάσις, stază, "plasament". Pluralul este metastazele / mə tæs tə siːz /. Cancerul apare după ce o singură celulă dintr-un țesut este deteriorată progresiv din punct de vedere genetic pentru a produce celule cu proliferare necontrolată. Această proliferare necontrolată, mitoză, produce o tumoare heterogenă primară. Celulele care constituie tumora suferă în cele din urmă metaplazie, urmată de displazie, apoi de anaplazie, ducând la un fenotip malign. Această malignitate permite invazia în circulație, urmată de invazia la un al doilea situs pentru tumorigeneză.
