Metastabilitatea descrie timpul prelungit petrecut de un sistem izolat într-o configurație de lungă durată, în afară de starea cea mai mică de energie a sistemului. În timpul unei perioade metastabile de viață finită, toți parametrii de descriere de stare ating și mențin valorile staționare. În timp ce se află în izolare: ▪ starea celui mai puțină energie este singura pe care sistemul o va locui pe o perioadă nedeterminată; ▪ sistemul va lăsa în mod spontan orice altă stare să se întoarcă în starea cea mai puțin energetică. Conceptul de metastabilitate provine din fizica tranzițiilor de fază de ordinul întâi pentru a dobândi noi semnificații în studiul particulelor subatomice agregate sau în molecule, macromolecule sau grupuri de atomi și molecule. Ulterior a fost împrumutat pentru studiul sistemelor de luare a deciziilor și a informațiilor.

Metastability describes the extended time spent by an isolated system in a long lived configuration other than the system's state of least energy. During a metastable state of finite lifetime all state-describing parameters reach and hold stationary values. While in isolation: ▪ the state of least energy is the only one the system will indefinitely inhabit; ▪ the system will spontaneously leave any other state to eventually return to the least energetic state. A single particle analogy may be drawn with a ball resting in a hollow on a slope. With some perturbation the ball may start rolling again to lower levels. Isomerisation is another common example, where higher energy isomers are long lived as they are prevented from rearranging to the ground state by barriers in the potential energy. The metastability concept originates in the physics of first-order phase transitions later to acquire new meanings in the study of aggregated subatomic particles or in molecules, macromolecules or clusters of atoms and molecules. Later on it was borrowed for the study of decision-making and information transmitting systems.
