Mediocritate principiu
Principiul mediocrității este noțiunea filosofică că "dacă un element este tras la întâmplare dintr-unul din mai multe seturi sau categorii, este mai probabil să provină din cea mai numeroasă categorie decât din oricare dintre categoriile mai puțin numeroase". Principiul a fost luat pentru a sugera că nu este nimic neobișnuit cu privire la evoluția sistemului solar, a Pământului, a oamenilor sau a oricărei națiuni. Este o euristică în spiritul principiului copernican și uneori este folosită ca o declarație filosofică despre locul omenirii. Ideea este de a-și asuma mediocritatea, mai degrabă decât să pornească de la presupunerea că un fenomen este special, privilegiat sau excepțional. În concordanță cu această noțiune, astronomii au raportat, la 4 noiembrie 2013, că ar putea exista până la 40 de miliarde de planete care se află în orbită în zonele locuibile ale unor stele asemănătoare soarelui și stelelor pitic roșii din Galaxia Calea Lactee, bazate pe spațiul Kepler misiune. 11 miliarde de planete estimate pot fi în orbita soare ca stele. Cea mai apropiată planetă poate fi la 12 ani lumină, potrivit oamenilor de știință.
