O miscellany este o colecție de diferite piese de scris de autori diferiți. Semnificând un amestec, un amestec sau un sortiment, o varietate variată poate include bucăți pe mai multe subiecte și într-o varietate de forme diferite. Spre deosebire de antologii, al căror scop este să ofere o viziune selectivă și canonică asupra literaturii, s-au produs mișcări de divertisment pentru o audiență contemporană și, astfel, accentuarea colectivității și a popularității. Laura Mandell și Rita Raley afirmă: această ultimă distincție este adesea vizibilă în diferențele categorice de bază dintre antologii pe de o parte și celelalte tipuri de colecții pe de altă parte, deoarece în cel pe care l-am citit poezii de excelență, "cea mai bună poezie engleză", iar în cealaltă citim poezii de interes. Din diferențele dintre un principiu al selecției și un principiu al colecției, atunci apare o diferență de valoare estetică, care este tocmai cea care se află în dezbaterea materialului "potrivit" pentru includerea în canon. Manuscrisele miscellanies sunt importante în Evul Mediu și sunt sursele pentru poezia vernaculară medievală mai scurtă.
