Mudstone, un tip de noroi, este o rocă sedimentară fin granulată, ale cărei constituenți originali erau argile sau nămoluri. Dimensiunea cerealelor este de până la 0,0625 mm, cu granule individuale prea mici pentru a fi distins fără microscop. Cu o presiune mărită în timp, mineralele argiloase plate pot deveni aliniate, cu aspect de fracționare sau stratificare paralelă. Acest material fin căptușit, care se despică ușor în straturi subțiri, se numește șisturi, distinct de noroi. Lipsa de fissiness sau stratificare în mudstone poate fi datorată fie texturii originale, fie întreruperii stratificării prin îngroșarea organismelor în sediment înainte de litiificare. Pietrele de noroi, cum ar fi mormântul și șisturile, reprezintă aproximativ 65% din toate rocile sedimentare. Mudstone seamănă cu lut întărit și, în funcție de împrejurările în care a fost format, poate prezenta fisuri sau fisuri, ca un depozit de argilă ars.
