Simplu ochi la nevertebrate
Un ochi simplu se referă la un tip de formă de ochi sau un aranjament optic care conține o singură lentilă. Un "ochi simplu" este așa numit în distincție de un "compus compus" multiplu și nu este neapărat simplu în sensul obișnuit al cuvântului. Ochii oamenilor și animalelor mari și lentilele de cameră sunt clasificate drept "simple", deoarece în ambele cazuri o singură lentilă colectează și focalizează lumina asupra retinei sau filmului. Multe insecte au ochi compuși constând din mai multe lentile, fiecare focalizând lumina pe un număr mic de celule retinulale. Structura ochiului unui animal este determinată de mediul în care trăiește și de sarcinile comportamentale pe care trebuie să le îndeplinească pentru a supraviețui. Artropodii diferă foarte mult în ceea ce privește habitatele în care trăiesc, precum și cerințele lor vizuale pentru găsirea alimentelor sau a conspecificelor și pentru a evita prădătorii. În consecință, o varietate enormă de modele de ochi se găsesc în artropode: natura a dezvoltat în mod repetat soluții noi pentru a depăși problemele sau limitările vizuale.

O altă definiție a "ocellus" este orice marcare a ochilor la animale, cum ar fi piciorul de pe coada unui păun. Ocelul este, de asemenea, o celulă decolorată mărită într-o frunză.
