Este singura specie clasificată în prezent în genul Nerium. Este cel mai frecvent cunoscut sub numele de oleandru, de la asemănarea superficială cu oleiul oleaginoase nelegat. Este cultivat atât de mult încât nu a fost identificată nicio regiune de origine precisă, deși a fost sugerată Asia de sud-vest.
