Orice apă într-o mare sau într-un lac care nu se află nici în partea de jos, nici în apropierea țărmului se poate spune că se află în zona pelagică. Cuvântul pelagic este derivat din pelerina greacă veche, adică "marea deschisă". Zona pelagică poate fi considerată ca un cilindru imaginar sau o coloană de apă care se deplasează de la suprafața mării până aproape de fund. Condițiile se schimbă mai adânc în coloana de apă; presiunea crește, temperatura scade și nu există lumină. În funcție de adâncime, coloana de apă, mai degrabă ca atmosfera Pământului, poate fi împărțită în straturi diferite. Zona pelagică ocupă 1.330 milioane de kilometri cubi, cu o adâncime medie de 3.68 kilometri și o adâncime maximă de 11 kilometri. Peștii care trăiesc în zona pelagică se numesc pești pelagici. Pelagia scade cu o înălțime mai mare. Este afectată de intensitatea luminii, presiunea, temperatura, salinitatea, aportul de oxigen dizolvat și substanțele nutritive și topografia submarinelor. În apele adânci, zona pelagică este denumită uneori zona oceanului deschis și poate fi în contrast cu apa care este aproape de coastă sau de platoul continental.

Any water in a sea or lake that is neither close to the bottom nor near the shore can be said to be in the pelagic zone. The word pelagic is derived from Ancient Greek πέλαγος , meaning "open sea". The pelagic zone can be thought of in terms of an imaginary cylinder or water column that goes from the surface of the sea almost to the bottom. Conditions change deeper down the water column; the pressure increases, the temperature drops and there is less light. Depending on the depth, the water column, rather like the Earth's atmosphere can be divided into different layers. The pelagic zone occupies 1,330 million cubic kilometres with a mean depth of 3.68 kilometres and maximum depth of 11 kilometres. Fish that live in the pelagic zone are called pelagic fish. Pelagic life decreases with increasing depth. It is affected by light intensity, pressure, temperature, salinity, the supply of dissolved oxygen and nutrients, and the submarine topography. In deep water, the pelagic zone is sometimes called the open-ocean zone and can be contrasted with water that is near the coast or on the continental shelf.
