Un pendentiv al domului principal Hagia Sophia Un pendentiv este un dispozitiv constructiv care permite plasarea unei domene circulare peste o încăpere pătrată sau o cupolă eliptică într-o cameră dreptunghiulară. Pendentivele, care sunt segmente triunghiulare ale unei sfere, se îngrămădesc spre punctele de la bază și se răspândesc în partea de sus pentru a stabili baza circulară sau eliptică continuă necesară pentru dom. În zidărie, pendenții primesc astfel greutatea cupolei, concentrându-l în cele patru colțuri, unde poate fi recepționat de către piloni de dedesubt. Înainte de dezvoltarea pendentivului, a fost folosit dispozitivul de corbelling sau folosirea de cârlig în colțurile unei încăperi. Pendentivele au fost utilizate frecvent în bisericile ortodoxe, renascentiste și baroce, cu un tambur cu ferestre adesea introdus între pendenți și dom. Primele experimente cu pendentive au fost făcute în construcția de case romane începând cu secolele II-III d.Hr., în timp ce dezvoltarea completă a formei a fost realizată în secolul al VI-lea de la Hagia Sophia de la Constantinopol.
