Permeametrul este un instrument pentru măsurarea rapidă a permeabilității electromagnetice a probelor de fier sau oțel cu o precizie suficientă pentru multe scopuri comerciale. Numele a fost aplicat inițial de Silvanus P. Thompson la un aparat conceput de el în 1890, care indică forța mecanică necesară pentru a detașa un capăt al eșantionului, aranjat ca miezul unui electromagnet drept, dintr-un jug de fier de formă specială; când această forță este cunoscută, permeabilitatea poate fi ușor calculată.
