From Old French phisonomie, via Medieval Latin, from Late Greek phusiognōmia, erroneous for Greek phusiognōmonia, from phusis nature + gnōmōn judge.

Fizionomie
Fiziologia este evaluarea caracterului sau a personalității unei persoane de la apariția sa exterioară, în special față. Termenul se poate referi și la aspectul general al unei persoane, obiect sau teren, fără referire la caracteristicile sale implicite, ca și în fizionomia unei comunități de plante. Credința unui astfel de studiu a variat din când în când. Practica a fost bine acceptată de filozofii greci antic, dar a căzut în disperare în Evul Mediu când a fost practicată de vagabonzi și mountebanks. Apoi a fost reînviat și popularizat de Johann Kaspar Lavater înainte de a cădea din favoarea din nou la sfârșitul secolului al XIX-lea. Fiziologia înțeleasă în trecut corespunde definiției contemporane a unei pseudosciințe. Nu există dovezi clare care să indice fiziologia, deși studii recente au sugerat că aparențele faciale "conțin un kernel de adevăr" despre personalitatea unei persoane.
