From French pourpois, from Medieval Latin porcopiscus (from Latin porcus pig + piscis fish), replacing Latin porcus marīnus sea pig.

Porpoise
Porpoises (/ pɔrpəs /; numite și mereswine) sunt cetacee mici din familia Phocoenidae; ele sunt legate de balene și delfini. Ele sunt distincte de delfini, deși cuvântul "porpoise" a fost folosit pentru a se referi la orice delfin mic, mai ales marinari și pescari. Cea mai evidentă diferență vizibilă dintre cele două grupuri este aceea că porpoizele au ciocuri mai scurte și dinții înclinate, în formă de spadă, distincte de dinții conici ai delfinilor. Numele provine de la pourpois francez, posibil din porciscus latin medieval (porc porc + pește piscis, clasic porcus marīnus (porcul marin).) Porpoizii, împărțiți în șase specii, trăiesc în toate oceanele și mai ales în apropierea țărmului. De asemenea, toate cele mai cunoscute specii sunt porpoisele portuare, care se găsesc în toate emisferele nordice. Ca și toate balenele cuțite, porpoizii sunt prădători, folosesc sunete (echolocation în formă de sonar) pentru a localiza prada și a coordona cu alții, vânând pește, calmar și crustacee.
