O formă posesivă este un cuvânt sau o construcție gramaticală folosită pentru a indica o relație de posesie într-un sens larg. În limba engleză, posesia este exprimată, de fapt, în aproximativ 40% din situațiile etichetate ca fiind "posesive" de către unii lingviști, motiv pentru care mulți consideră că termenul este incorect și înșelător și în schimb preferă alții, mai ales termenul mai tradițional "genitiv". Formele posibile care apar cu un substantiv și indică posesorul referentului acelui substantiv, servind astfel ca determinatori sau adjective, se numesc determinanți posesivi sau adjective posesive. Exemplele includ cuvintele engleze ale mele și ale lui Jane, așa cum sunt folosite în expresiile pe care prietenii mei și lucrarea lui Jane o fac. Formele posesive care indică posesorul ceva, dar apar independent, fără a se califica un substantiv, se numesc pronume posesive. Exemplele în limba engleză includ și cuvintele minelor și ale dvs., ca și în a mea, roșii și prefer preferințele voastre. Formele, cum ar fi Jane's, preferă lui Jane să îndeplinească aceeași funcție, deși sunt mai rar descrise ca pronume posesive, fiind derivate din substantive.
