Potențialitate și actualitate
În filosofie, potențialitatea și actualitatea sunt principiile unei dihotomii pe care Aristotel a folosit-o pentru analiza mișcării, cauzalității, eticii și fiziologiei în Fizica, Metafizica, Etica și De Anima. Conceptul de potențialitate, în acest context, se referă în general la orice "posibilitate" pe care se poate spune că o are. Aristotel nu a luat în considerare toate posibilitățile la fel și a subliniat importanța celor care devin reale din punct de vedere propriu atunci când condițiile sunt corecte și nimic nu le oprește. Actualitatea, spre deosebire de potențialitate, este mișcarea, schimbarea sau activitatea care reprezintă un exercițiu sau o împlinire a unei posibilități, atunci când o posibilitate devine reală în sensul cel mai complet. Aceste concepte, în forme modificate, au rămas foarte importante în Evul Mediu, influențând dezvoltarea teologiei medievale în mai multe moduri. Mergând mai departe în vremurile moderne, în timp ce înțelegerea naturii implicată de dihotomie a pierdut importanța, terminologia a găsit noi utilizări, care se dezvoltă indirect din vechime. Acest lucru este cel mai evident în cuvinte precum "energia" și "dinamica", dar și în exemple precum conceptul biologic de "entelechy".
