Progressive rock

Rock-ul progresiv, cunoscut și sub denumirea de prog rock sau prog, este un subgenre de muzică rock care își are originea în Regatul Unit, cu evoluții ulterioare în Germania, Italia și Franța, de-a lungul anilor 1960 și 1970. Ea a evoluat de la rock psychedelic și a provenit, la fel ca și rockul de artă, ca o încercare de a da o mai mare pondere artistică și credibilitate muzicii rock. Trupele au abandonat single-ul scurt în favoarea tehnicilor de instrumentație și compoziție mai frecvent asociate cu jazz-ul sau muzica clasică, în încercarea de a oferi muzicii rock același nivel de sofisticare muzicală și respect critic. Cântecele au fost înlocuite de apartamente muzicale care se întindeau adesea la 20 sau 40 de minute în lungime și conțineau influențe simfonice, teme muzicale extinse, versuri filosofice și orchestrații complexe. Genul nu a fost fără critici, totuși, deoarece unii comentatori au găsit conceptele "pretențioase" și sunetele "pompos" și "exagerate". Rock-ul progresiv a văzut un nivel ridicat de popularitate pe parcursul anilor 1970, mai ales în mijlocul deceniului.

Progressive rock, also known as prog rock or prog, is a rock music subgenre that originated in the United Kingdom, with further developments in Germany, Italy, and France, throughout the mid-to-late 1960s and 1970s. It developed from psychedelic rock, and originated, similarly to art rock, as an attempt to give greater artistic weight and credibility to rock music. Bands abandoned the short pop single in favor of instrumentation and compositional techniques more frequently associated with jazz or classical music in an effort to give rock music the same level of musical sophistication and critical respect. Songs were replaced by musical suites that often stretched to 20 or 40 minutes in length and contained symphonic influences, extended musical themes, philosophical lyrics and complex orchestrations. The genre was not without criticism, however, as some reviewers found the concepts "pretentious" and the sounds "pompous" and "overblown". Progressive rock saw a high level of popularity throughout the 1970s, especially in the middle of the decade.
