Un model de rol este o persoană a cărei comportare, exemplu, sau succes este sau poate fi simulată de alții, în special de tineri. Termenul "model de rol" este creditat sociologului Robert K. Merton, care a inventat fraza în timpul carierei sale. Merton a emis ipoteza că indivizii se compară cu grupurile de referință ale persoanelor care ocupă rolul social la care aspiră individul. Un exemplu este modul în care fanii vor idoliza și imita sportivii profesioniști sau artiștii de divertisment. Deși termenul "model de rol" a fost criticat ca "depășit", termenul și responsabilitatea asociată acestuia rămân proeminente în conștiința publică ca o expresie frecvent utilizată și o "prezență puternică" în industria de divertisment și în mass-media.

A role model is a person whose behavior, example, or success is or can be emulated by others, especially by younger people. The term "role model" is credited to sociologist Robert K. Merton, who coined the phrase during his career. Merton hypothesized that individuals compare themselves with reference groups of people who occupy the social role to which the individual aspires. An example being the way fans will idolize and imitate professional athletes or entertainment artists. Although the term "role model" has been criticized as "outdated", the term and its associated responsibility remains prominent in the public consciousness as a commonly used phrase, and a "powerful presence" in the entertainment industry and media.
