Un rootkit este un tip de software de tip stealth, de obicei rău intenționat, conceput pentru a ascunde existența anumitor procese sau programe din metodele normale de detectare și pentru a permite accesul privilegiat continuu la un computer. Termenul rootkit este o concatenare a "rădăcină" (numele tradițional al contului privilegiat în sistemele de operare Unix) și cuvântul "kit" (care se referă la componentele software care implementează instrumentul). Termenul "rootkit" are conotații negative prin asocierea cu malware. Instalarea Rootkit poate fi automatizată sau un atacator poate instala-o odată ce a obținut accesul la root sau Administrator. Obținerea acestui acces este rezultatul atacului direct asupra unui sistem (de ex., Exploatarea unei vulnerabilități cunoscute (cum ar fi escaladarea privilegiilor) sau a unei parole (obținută prin cracare sau inginerie socială)). Odată instalat, devine posibilă ascunderea intruziunii și menținerea accesului privilegiat. Cheia este accesul root sau Administrator. Controlul complet asupra unui sistem înseamnă că software-ul existent poate fi modificat, inclusiv software-ul care altfel ar putea fi utilizat pentru a detecta sau eluda acest software.
