Cauciuc natural
Cauciuc natural, numit și cauciuc sau cauciuc din India, așa cum a fost produs inițial, constă din polimeri ai compusului organic izopren, cu impurități minore ale altor compuși organici plus apă. Formele de poliizopren care sunt utile ca cauciuc natural sunt clasificate ca elastomeri. În prezent, cauciucul este recoltat în principal sub formă de latex de la anumiți copaci. Latexul este un coloid lipicios, lăptos, care se trage prin incizii în coajă și colectând lichidul în vase într-un proces numit "atingere". Latexul este apoi rafinat în cauciuc pregătit pentru prelucrare comercială. Cauciuc natural este utilizat în multe aplicații și produse, fie singur, fie în combinație cu alte materiale. În majoritatea formelor sale utile, are un raport de întindere mare, o rezistență ridicată și este extrem de rezistent la apă.
