Rubin
Un rubin este o piatră roz de sânge roșu, o varietate de corund mineral. Culoarea roșie este cauzată în principal de prezența elementului crom. Numele său provine de la ruber, latină pentru roșu. Alte soiuri de corundum de înaltă calitate se numesc safire. Rubinul este considerat unul dintre cele patru pietre prețioase, împreună cu safirul, smaraldul și diamantul. Prețurile de rubine sunt în principal determinate de culoare. Cel mai strălucitor și mai valoros "roșu" numit sânge-roșu, comandă o primă mare față de alte rubine de o calitate similară. După culoare urmează claritate: similar cu diamantele, o piatră clară va comanda o primă, dar un rubin fără incluziuni de tip rutil de ac ar putea indica faptul că piatra a fost tratată. Tăierea și caratele sunt, de asemenea, un factor important în stabilirea prețului. Ruby este piatra naturala traditionala pentru luna iulie si este intotdeauna mai deschisa rosu sau roz decat granat.
