Șofrănelul este o plantă anuală foarte ramificată, erbacee. Este cultivat comercial pentru ulei vegetal extras din semințe. Plantele au o înălțime de 30 până la 150 cm, cu capete de flori globulare având flori galbene, portocalii sau roșii. Fiecare ramură va avea de obicei de la una la cinci capete de flori care conțin 15-20 de semințe pe cap. Șofrănelul este nativ în medii aride având ploaie sezonieră. Se dezvoltă o profundă adâncime care îi permite să prospere în astfel de medii.
