Hura crepitans, copacul de nisip, de asemenea cunoscut sub numele de possumwood și jabillo, este un copac verde al familiei spurge, originar din regiunile tropicale din America de Nord și de Sud, inclusiv pădurea tropicală din Amazon. Este recunoscuta de multele intinse intunecate, ascutite si coaja neteda maro. Aceste spini au făcut ca aceasta să fie numită Maimuță fără urcare. Grădinile copacilor pot crește până la 60 de metri, iar frunzele ovate mari cresc până la 2 metri. Sunt monoeiste. Florile roșii nu au petale. Florile masculine cresc pe vârfuri lungi; florile de sex feminin sunt solitare în axilă. Fructul este o capsulă mare cu dehiscență explozivă; semințele pot fi lansate la 70 de metri pe secundă. O singură sursă afirmă că boabele coapte capapultă semințele până la 100 de metri. O altă sursă afirmă că semințele sunt aruncate până la 45 de metri de copac, cu un mod de aproximativ 30 de metri. Acesta a fost, de asemenea, cunoscut sub numele de copac dinamită, numit astfel pentru sunetul exploziv al fructelor coapte, pe măsură ce se împarte în segmente. Fructele sale sunt capsule în formă de dovleac, lungime 1,4-2 cm, diametru de 2-3,2 inci, cu 16 carlige aranjate radial. Semințele sale sunt aplatizate și cu diametrul de circa 0,8 cm.
