În contextul evoluției, anumite trăsături sau alele de gene segregate în cadrul unei populații pot fi supuse selecției. În cadrul selecției, indivizii cu avantaje sau trăsături "adaptive" tind să aibă mai mult succes decât colegii lor reproductiv - ceea ce înseamnă că aceștia contribuie cu mai mulți descendenți la generația viitoare decât ceilalți. Când aceste trăsături au o bază genetică, selecția poate crește prevalența acestor trăsături, deoarece descendenții vor moșteni acele trăsături ale părinților lor. Atunci când selecția este intensă și persistentă, trăsăturile adaptive devin universale pentru populație sau specie, despre care se poate spune că au evoluat.
