Demența este o categorie largă de boli cerebrale care determină pierderea pe termen lung a abilității de a gândi și a explica în mod clar că este suficient de gravă pentru a afecta funcționarea zilnică a unei persoane. Pentru ca diagnosticul să fie prezent, trebuie să fie o schimbare de la modul în care persoana a fost anterior. Cea mai comună formă de demență este boala Alzheimer. Alte forme includ demența corpului Lewy, demența vasculară, demența frontotemporală, paralizia supranucleară progresivă, degenerarea corticobazală, hidrocefalia de presiune normală și boala Creutzfeldt-Jakob. Cu excepția câtorva tipuri tratabile, în cele mai multe cazuri nu există nici un tratament. Inhibitorii cholinesterazei sunt adesea utilizați la începutul cursului bolii; cu toate acestea, beneficiul pare să fie redus. Intervențiile cognitive și comportamentale pot fi adecvate.
