O continuare este o lucrare narativă, documentară sau de altă natură, de literatură, de film, de teatru, de televiziune, de muzică sau de joc, care continuă povestea unei lucrări anterioare sau se extinde asupra acesteia. În contextul comun al unei lucrări narative a ficțiunii, o continuare ilustrează evenimente care se găsesc în același univers fictiv ca și o lucrare anterioară, de obicei în urma cronologică a evenimentelor din acea lucrare. În multe cazuri, continuarea continuă elemente ale povestirii originale, adesea cu aceleași personaje și setări. O continuare poate duce la o serie, în care elemente cheie apar într-un număr de povești. Deși diferența dintre mai multe succesiuni și o serie este oarecum arbitrară, este clar că unele francize media au suficiente eforturi pentru a deveni o serie, fie că a fost inițial planificată ca atare sau nu. Sequels sunt atractive pentru creatori și pentru editori, deoarece există mai puține riscuri implicate în a reveni la o poveste cu popularitate cunoscută, mai degrabă decât în dezvoltarea de caractere și setări noi și netestate.
