Shire
Un shire este un termen tradițional pentru o divizare a terenurilor, care se găsește în Regatul Unit și în Australia. În unele părți rurale din Australia, un shire este o zonă guvernamentală locală, dar nu este sinonim cu "județul", care este, în Australia, o diviziune administrativă a terenurilor. În mod individual sau ca sufix în Scoția și în nord-estul Angliei, cuvântul este pronunțat / ʃaɪər /. Ca un sufix într-un nume de limbă engleză sau galeză, este pronunțat în majoritatea regiunilor / ʃɜr /, sau uneori / ʃɪər /. În Marea Britanie, "shire" este termenul original pentru ceea ce este de obicei cunoscut acum ca un județ; cuvântul județ fiind introdus la Cucerirea Normanului din Anglia. Cele două sunt sinonime. Deși în județele moderne britanice de folosire sunt denumite "shires", în principal în contexte poetice, termeni precum Shire Hall rămân obișnuiți. Shire rămâne, de asemenea, o parte comună a multor nume ale județelor. Cuvântul derivă din vechiul englez scir, el însuși un derivat al skizo-ului proto-germanic, ceea ce înseamnă îngrijire sau taxă oficială.

Prima definiție a shire-ului în dicționar este una din județele britanice. O altă definiție a regiunii este un district rural care are propriul consiliu local. Shire este, de asemenea, județele Midland din Anglia, în special Northamptonshire și Leicestershire, celebre pentru vânătoare etc.
